The bizhub Highveld Lions franchise was established in the 2004/2005-season when the former Transvaal (Gauteng) and Western Transvaal (North-West) merged together. The team, under the auspices of Head Coach Shukri Conrad, was based at the magnificent Bidvest Wanderers. The team, who at that time donned their yellow and red attire, won the first ever Standard Bank Pro20 Trophy.
Since then the team has been coached by Gordon Parsons and Jimmy Cook and is currently headed by Dave Nosworthy. The 2009/2010 season saw the team becoming birds of another feather when they stepped out in their new blue and red clothing that still hinted on the yellow of seasons past.
The team in 2009/2010 continued to the Standard Bank Pro20 Finals which opened the gateway for them to the 2010 Airtel Champions League T20 that was hosted in South Africa. A memorable win against Sachin Tendulkar's Mumbai Indians got the team off to a good start but they did not continue past the round-robin stages.
The 2010 MTN40 Competition had the team plummeting off to a 4 match win start and then slowing down to not proceed beyond the semi-finals.
The team did not opt to buy players from other franchises this season but rather focussed on the exciting bunch of youngsters coming through the ranks. The team have two exciting signings for the 2012 T20 series in Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq who will aid them in their campaign for the Champions League T20.
